I can haz fire! The fireplace gas logs were installed today. They even gave me a key since I couldn't find one here. | | Monday, November 2nd, 2009 | | 6:41 pm |
My new roommate
Well, one of them, anyway. I've seen several. Anyone have any idea what this is? He's about an inch to 1-1/4" long, about the diameter of a pencil lead. He moves quickly across both carpet and hard surfaces. When "touched", he curls up in a ring and plays dead for a few minutes. And he doesn't swim well. | | Thursday, October 29th, 2009 | | 9:41 pm |
"Cause and Effect"
One of my favorite TNG episodes is running on a local station. === We always played games on Sunday night, then watched TNG when it came on after the 10pm news. This night we heard the episode start in the other room but we were finishing up whatever game we were playing. So it was a few minutes before we got into the other room to watch the episode. "What'd we miss?" "The Enterprise blew up." "No, really, what'd we miss?" "Really. It blew up. That was the first act, and then it went to commercial." | | 2:14 pm |
Just tweaked it a little...
I had an enterprising gentleman knock on the door and let me know he was selling magazine subscriptions so that his class from OU could go to England. And since no one wants to buy magazine subscriptions for themselves, he was going to use the money to buy a magazine subscription "for our soldiers" and send them overseas. Let's see...this all sounds believable, right? 1) OU doesn't have its students do door-to-door fundraisers. The University figures that will piss the population off in its home town, and that's not a good idea. 2) If you've got "an internship" with the BBC in London, and you're going there from Oklahoma, you probably need to come up with the travel money yourself. "Your class is going" just doesn't sound right if you're the one with the internship. 3) If you're going to go door-to-door you might want to clean up a bit and look presentable. 4) I'm sure you can get magazines to our soldiers in the Middle East. I'm also sure that people (and magazines) already do that. They don't need any extra help from enterprising gentlemen. It's a good indicator that the economy sucks when people do stuff like this. I told him no, thanku. | | 11:49 am |

Frakkin' Frak
The refrigerator is warm again. The replacement part came in last week, and the repairman was out yesterday to install it. With the temporary thermostat that I had in there since Labor Day, I had a temperature of around 37 or 38 degrees. Now, it's at 52 degrees. I've tried different settings, and there's no effect. (I also can't hear the compressor cycle running for the refrigerator like it was the past few weeks.) The freezer is still well below freezing. So I sent a note to the landlord and let him know. The refrigerator is an Amana 18" refrigerator/freezer combo, and it's about 20 years old. But it appears to work fine if you fix it correctly. Of course I bought groceries today. Just poured out almost two gallons of warm milk. | | 8:17 am |
"Castle"
If you're not watching it, you should be. Monday nights on ABC. The writing is great. It's a mystery author following a homicide detective in New York and the interaction between the two. The acting is good, but with the writing it would be tough to screw it up. I'm enjoying every episode. And for you Firefly/Serenity fans, Nathan Fillion is the lead. There are so many inside jokes that Browncoat fans would pick up on..."two by two, hands of blue", "there are no cows in space", and so on. I hate mentioning it, since usually when I say I like a program it gets canceled shortly after. But "Castle"'s ratings have been good, so hopefully it's safe from my supporting comments. | | Sunday, October 25th, 2009 | | 3:55 pm |
Home
Thank goodness. I didn't think I'd make it. The flights back were okay, but I started a fever about halfway home from Atlanta. I was coughing, but I was using the "sweat" towel I carry to cover my mouth. I decided not to tell the flight attendant that I thought I was sick and it was probably some variant of H1N1, since I figured they'd quarantine the plane. I made an extra effort not to cough on anyone. I'm home now, so if I have to go ahead and get sick I'll do so. (If it turns out that I'm Patient Zero for an outbreak in Oklahoma, I guess I can apologize later.) And I'd like to apologize to the nice woman who was sitting behind me. She had a "lousy" flight, and apparently she had to deal with some strong odors. (She explained all of this in a loud voice on her cell phone during the taxi in to the gate.) If she'd asked me, I would have pointed out that she was in the last row and the lav was right behind here. Truth be known, one of the problems I have during air travel is, er, noxious fumes. Something about the pressure changes in the cabin, but it does it every time. And it ain't burps, for some reason. Besides, her kid kept kicking my seat so I figure it was payback or some such. The Duplex of Solitude is still standing. I'm going to go upstairs and see if my pillow missed me. Don't worry about me any more than usual. I'll just whine about being sick for a day or two. | | Friday, October 23rd, 2009 | | 10:20 pm |
"They tore the old place down"
Went out to Littleton, Massachusetts yesterday. I moved to Littleton in 1981 to live with my mother, my sister and my stepfather. I graduated from high school there, and lived there while I did my first year of college at Lowell before returning to Oklahoma. At the end of our driveway was a fruit stand run by the Paskewicz family. (I think I've spelled that right, but I couldn't find a reference online.) The last time I visited, they had closed the fruit stand down and the house next to it appeared abandoned. This time, the whole thing has been razed and a big new building was being constructed. I stopped to talk to someone nearby who turned out to be an old neighbor of ours, and he said it's the new police station. The current station is in a building that looks like it'll fall down in a good wind, so a new station was probably a good idea. But it's such a change from before. Or I thought it was until I went by the old high school. Not only is it gone, but they built a brand-new middle school in its place. The last time I saw it, it was being used as administrative offices so it's not a big surprise that it's gone, but it was still a shock to me when I saw it wasn't there. I spent several years of my life there. Now it's just memories. === I made some side remark about the flu I had not being the H1N1 variety. Now I'm not so sure. This is certainly the worst I can ever remember the flu being, and it may be because it was a variant like H1N1. I didn't get tested or anything. The local health boards say that H1N1 is "widespread" here and that the seasonal flu hasn't started yet, so maybe it was H1N1 after all. I'm better now, and I'm happy about that. === Had dinner with some friends this evening. I hadn't see them since before the move, and it was great to spend time with them. All good. | | Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 | | 9:18 am |
Coincidence or not?
I go to Dallas for a week on vacation. They arrest someone there for terroristic threats. I go to Boston for a week. They arrest someone here for terroristic threats. I'll issue the standard "it's not me" disclaimer. I'll also mention that I"m going to be in Jacksonville, Florida at Thanksgiving and D.C. in the first part of December just in case any of you want to make alternate plans. === I can haz flu. It's not the H1N1 kind. I'm not dying, I'm not going to the hospital, it's a nice hotel room and there's plenty of fluids and rest. I was due for my fall flu attack...it just happened this week. I'll avoid the office. I also have face masks and hand sanitizer with me just in case. === The bridge of my nose is peeling, so I've got some "Bubba jerky" if anyone wants some. === Dinner was great last night. I hadn't seen Tim in over 20 years, and we were able to pick up with our lives without any effort. I hope to continue the friendship. | | Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 | | 8:02 pm |
No, thank you
I was coming up in the elevator here at the hotel, and the other guy in there asked me if I knew what the score was on the Yankees game. I actually grimaced. (smile) I told him I was sorry, but that I was a Red Sox fan and I couldn't watch any more baseball this season. Yeah, he said, but you can cheer for the other team to lose, right? I can't, I replied. It hurts too much to watch. I wished him a good night. | | Monday, October 19th, 2009 | | 5:26 am |
Zombie Photos
Click on the pictures for larger images. Before After As you can tell, it was understated. The main thing was that I was lying on my back after I died, so most of the blood had pooled in the back of my head. You can't see the lividity markings on the back of my neck. (I'll see if we have some better pictures of those.) | | Sunday, October 18th, 2009 | | 4:34 pm |
Hey, what's this white stuff?
I'm here. I'm in my hotel room in Lexington. It's snowing. Damned if I'm going out in this...I can't remember how to drive in the snow. | | 2:33 am |
It's time to start
Leaving for the airport in an hour or so. I'm flying to Boston, arriving this afternoon. Already saw the Nor'easter advisory, so I know I've got that to look forward to. I took extra magazines for the delay. I'm staying at a hotel in Lexington this week. Every night is dinner with someone I haven't seen in at least a few months...in one case a friend from high school that I haven't seen in over 20 years. Staff meeting at work on Monday morning, and I'm planning to work from the office on Wednesday night. I still have to work the cycle every night, but I can do the other nights from my hotel room if I want. Oh, and this is my last trip with two laptops, I think. I use a Web interface to access my desktop computer in Boston, and I haven't used the company laptop in a couple of months. If my boss approves, I'm turning it in this week so I don't have to schlep it on trips any more. My boss made a comment that indicated to me that he likes a "belt and suspenders" theory of production support, so I'll talk to him about it this week. The party last night was fun. I think I got most of the makeup off...if not, it'll wear off in the next day or two. My "makeup guy" decided not to go with latex, so it was all eyeliner pencil, bases and detail, and "powder" on top. His significant other said "see, this is what we women have to go through every day". There were a *lot* of people there, and my team won the trivia game. Most importantly, I got out of there at 10pm so I managed to get three hours of unexpected sleep this morning. Very nice. En-route/awaiting transport... | | Friday, October 16th, 2009 | | 1:42 am |

Auntie Em! Auntie Em!
The big news story tonight? It's foggy outside. That's usually a good sign that the world is okay. I got started on my Halloween costume tonight. I took an old pair of pants and an old shirt, cut and ripped holes in them, and they're in hot water in the washer. I'm going to cycle them three or four times, then dry them. The party is Saturday, and my friend is going to do my makeup when I get there. The theme is zombies. I'll take before and after pictures. I have one suitcase packed for Boston. I was holding off on packing the other one since it still, well, stinks from a few weeks ago. I need some sunshine to "cook" it and get rid of the odors, but now it's looking like Friday or Saturday before that happens here. No worries. I'll fly out Sunday morning and spend all next week in Boston. ( freya46, I don't think I'll make Montreal this trip. I'll see you in the spring.) All good. | | Sunday, October 11th, 2009 | | 3:20 am |
I'm home. The "fishing cabin" I stayed in needs some soundproofing between it and the adjoining "hunting cabin", but as loud as the party was I don't think it would have mattered. About 9pm Saturday (after a few hours of sleep with ear plugs and listening to it without), I said "screw this" and drove home. The event was good. Our Baron closed his court on Saturday night by announcing he was stepping down in the spring. His ex-wife resigned a few months ago, so it's time for a good old-fashioned hat-fi^H^H^H^H^H^H baronial selection process. My best friend and his wife have already decided they want to run this time around. She's also the baronial seneschal, so if they're chosen then the drop-dead part of my job description gets activated. I told them they could have me through the end of 2010, as a deputy or as the baronial seneschal. We'll see what happens. It was cold this weekend...colder here than in Boston right now. No snow, but temperatures in the 30s. The house is at 63 degrees. Since we're just to have a couple of days of this, then back into the 80s, I'm going to wait and not turn on the furnace. Maybe. All good. | | Thursday, October 8th, 2009 | | 10:14 am |
"Holiday Road"
I'm on vacation until Sunday afternoon. This weekend is our barony's Protectorate event, and I took a couple of days off so I could participate. While Monday is the Columbus Day holiday, the markets will be open so it's not a holiday for me...I have to work Sunday night and Monday. Still, this whole "day off" thing is kind of a neat feeling. Think I'll sleep a whole bunch. |
