And then there were two
I thought one of the mice I saw was really darker than the other. The second mouse showed up tonight in the kitchen, commuting between the refrigerator and the stove. The trap is already there...it'll just have to hit it. | | 2:11 pm |
Kamp's
I'm craving Kamp's Ham Salad. It's a local delicacy. I just don't know that I'm craving it enough to drive to northern Oklahoma City (an hour each way), plus paying $20/quart for the stuff. I mean, it's *really* good, but it may not be that good. I usually eat it with Ritz or Triscuit crackers. You can make sandwiches with it, but I think that's too complicated. I'd probably eat it with my fingers if I could get away with it. | | 2:49 am |
Back to Ready One
No mouse sightings in the last couple of days. I'm not silly enough to think that was the only mouse for the season, but for now I'm going to go back to being regular-paranoid instead of super-paranoid (i.e. "What the hell was that noise?"). I'm going to leave the remaining spin trap on the floor. It's not hurting anything, and it may serve as some sort of an early-warning device if another one shows up. | | Monday, November 30th, 2009 | | 8:04 pm |
SNAP!
I guess the mouse liked peanut butter after all. The trap has an indicator on it labeled "mouse caught". The indicator wasn't quite there, so I did what someone else online had suggested...took the suspect trap and weighed it versus the trap that hadn't fired. The suspect trap is 0.4oz heavier...is that enough for a mouse? So I very carefully stood over the sink and rotated the trap open. I expected a mouse to jump out at me...if it did, it would have landed in the garbage disposal. (Yes, ew, I know.) I turned the trap until I could see the tail...there's a mouse in there, and it isn't moving. I took a piece of masking tape and wrapped up the trap. (There's a thin piece of paper on the bottom where you load the bait...if it was still alive, it could chew out through that.) I then took the whole thing and dropped it in the trash can. And, just for fun, I took the unfired trap and put it in the exact same place as the first one. I guess I'll see if there's more than one mouse. Me 1, Mice 0. Mouse Commute
I sat here and watched the mouse. It came out from under the stove, went under the kitchen, ran around the living room behind the couch and bookshelf, along the fireplace, and to the bottom of the stairs. (Now I know where the hole is there...I'll get that filled today.) It ran past both traps without even stopping at them, so I'm guessing it wasn't hungry. If I had sticky traps, I'd have it. But I said I wouldn't do that. | | Saturday, November 28th, 2009 | | 10:46 pm |
Oh, it is on!
Working on the computer in the living room...lights are on in the kitchen because I'm running laundry. A mouse comes out from under the stove, stands in the middle of the floor and stares at me. I yell, it jumps but doesn't run. I clap my hands together, and it runs back under the stove. Okay. We're not sneaking about anymore. We're coming out in a brightly lit room to see what's up. That's over the line. I'll get the peanut butter tomorrow morning, and I see where the other two traps are going. | | 12:55 am |
Frakkin' roommates...
Sitting here watching television and monitoring the cycle. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a black shape running along the floor next to the fireplace. It turns around and runs back to the corner before I can do anything, then disappears behind the bookcase. Crap. You know, it's a damn big house, and there's plenty of room for me and whomever else wants to live here, but when they go out of their way to let me know about their presence then I gotta do something about it. They're not paying rent...they don't get to hang out here for free. There is *no* food on the floor or in the cabinets in the kitchen (it's all in the freezer and refrigerator), so they're just in here because it's warm. I put down a couple of the D-Con "spin" traps along the fireplace. I thought I had peanut butter, but I don't. I'm going to leave the traps down without bait and see if the damn mouse will crawl in there just to see what's going on. If not, then I'll pick up some peanut butter the next time I'm out. The last time I had to deal with this was in Malden a couple of years ago. I used a sticky trap along a route I knew the mouse used, and I caught it but it made a mess trying to escape before I could dispose of it. I'd rather not do that again if I can avoid it. I also have spring traps, but again I'd rather not due to the mess. | | Friday, November 27th, 2009 | | 10:19 pm |
The circus is coming to town!
Caution: the following link is to Westboro's web site. Language and rudeness applies. Westboro Baptist to Protest at OU/OSU GameOU Memorial Stadium - God Hates Your Sports 'N YOU! 180 W. Brooks St. WBC will picket your football game - your SPORT.Apparently not only does Westboro Baptist hate gay people and soldiers, but also football games. "Bedlam Football", the annual meeting between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State Universities, will be visited by the protesters from Westboro Baptist. It's a home game, so I had no plans to go out anyway. But you're talking about a game that will have potentially a hundred thousand fans. And these are good old boys...they aren't going to be real happy about people who show up and protest their love of football. Luckily the protesters are scheduled to be done by 11:30am, so the boys won't be "liquored up" just yet. I'm nowhere near the campus, so I'll get to miss out on all the fun. Idiots. Oh. And Sarah Palin will be here next week on her book tour. The fun just never stops. | | 8:18 pm |
...in so many ways Bedre Chocolate CrispsI stopped at Bedre's on the way home from Dallas. The place is owned by the Chickasaw Nation. A "crisp" is a potato chip (looks like a Pringles, but I can't swear to that) covered in chocolate. I'm told that a batch of these was sent to Gulf Wars a while back and disappeared quickly. I can vouch for that...I'm "trying out" all three flavors just in case. It's so wrong. But it's so good. | | 5:24 pm |
And I'm home
For a few days, anyway...I leave for a week in D.C. in 9 days or so. The house was still standing, and I managed to get a nap before I started work tonight. | | Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 | | 7:01 pm |
I'm here
(For those of you who are gophers...er, golfers...I'm just outside of the Sawgrass complex. Mom lives in one of the "villages" on the course.) No problems on the flight. Got in with no problems, then "lucked out" as the Bills forced the Jaguars to win at the last minute. This kept the game traffic downtown while I took the loop around to get down to PVB. The A/C is working in the hotel room. I had dinner with Mom, my sister and her family. Mom wanted to watch a DVD afterwards, but I begged out so I could get some sleep. Mom looks good, and she's feeling more in control of her life and better about the world around her. (I was concerned. I'm better now.) It's Florida. I actually got stuck in a line of cars behind an old man in the right lane, 40 in a 55 zone, with his left flasher on. The stereotype in real life. (I didn't see what ethnicity he was.) | | Saturday, November 21st, 2009 | | 11:49 am |
A little early for Thanksgiving...
I'm about to drive down to Dallas. I'm out with a friend (male friend...don't get excited, everyone) tonight, and then tomorrow I fly to Florida. I'll be there until Friday so I can see my mother and celebrate Thanksgiving with my family there. I'll be online and about. | | Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 | | 11:17 am |
The Heat is On
We had our first "good" cold snap starting last night. The last time, I worked around it with a space heater. Knowing that I'm out of town next week and there will be a couple of morning freezes, I finally pushed myself out in the garage to light the pilot for the furnace. Once I found the pilot light, I noticed that there was a *lot* of soot in and around it. Soot is a normal part of an oil burner, but this is "clean" natural gas and soot usually indicates something bad. So I stopped and sent a note to the landlord letting him know what I found. I stressed that this wasn't a panic situation, and that anytime this week would be fine. The furnace guy knocked on the door at 10:30 this morning. I was surprised. He cleaned out the furnace, replaced a couple of parts, and got it running. So I Can Haz Heat. | | Monday, November 16th, 2009 | | 10:16 pm |
Annual Physical
I saw the doctor this morning for my annual physical. The only issue so far was a blood pressure of 132/98. That is an increase of 8 points from the last visit, and is probably a "regular" reading and not just stress from the doctor visit. The doctor asked me if I wanted medicine for my blood pressure, and I told him no...I'd try diet and exercise first. (I already take enough drugs.) I told him about Mom's cancer, so that's been added to my family history. They drew blood. For some reason, the phlebotomist had trouble hitting the veins. She tried my right elbow, my right hand (I've got a really nice bruise the size of a silver dollar...hurts a little, but not bad), and finally found one on my left hand. I think I can remember once or twice in my life when it took two sticks, and all of the other times they found blood on the first try. She said she could see the veins, but she couldn't hit them. I think it more likely that she was having a bad day then that there's something suddenly wrong with my veins. I'll see the blood workup in a couple of weeks. | | Sunday, November 15th, 2009 | | 1:52 pm |
Doggie?
I went down and visited the local Beagle rescue today. Two of the volunteers in the rescue are my landlord and his wife, so that will help if I want to get a dog from them. I've never gotten use to "kennels". I hate the smell of the dogs, the cleaning solutions, etc. all mixed together. One of the reasons I'd get a dog is to get it out of that place. (And this place did a pretty good job, from what I could see...things were clean, the dogs were well cared for and in good spirits, etc.) I saw a couple of possibilities, but I'd already decided not to get one until mid-December since I want to get a couple of week-long trips done before then. After that, I'll have an extended period of time at home to adjust to a dog, and vice versa. I hadn't thought of a way to install a pet door in a rental property before today, so that part was good. (Get another door from someplace like Habitat for Humanity that fits the existing door jamb and has the hinges on the correct side, then put the current door in storage for when you move out.) Dinner with some friends tonight, and then an annual physical in the morning. | | Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 | | 12:32 pm |

I can haz fire! The fireplace gas logs were installed today. They even gave me a key since I couldn't find one here. | | Monday, November 2nd, 2009 | | 6:41 pm |
My new roommate
Well, one of them, anyway. I've seen several. Anyone have any idea what this is? He's about an inch to 1-1/4" long, about the diameter of a pencil lead. He moves quickly across both carpet and hard surfaces. When "touched", he curls up in a ring and plays dead for a few minutes. And he doesn't swim well. | | Thursday, October 29th, 2009 | | 9:41 pm |
"Cause and Effect"
One of my favorite TNG episodes is running on a local station. === We always played games on Sunday night, then watched TNG when it came on after the 10pm news. This night we heard the episode start in the other room but we were finishing up whatever game we were playing. So it was a few minutes before we got into the other room to watch the episode. "What'd we miss?" "The Enterprise blew up." "No, really, what'd we miss?" "Really. It blew up. That was the first act, and then it went to commercial." |
