    January Chestnut Farms CSA
We joined the Chestnut Farms meat CSA back in December. We get 15lbs of assorted pasture-raised, drug-free meats once per month, for $115. Definitely not the most economical way to buy meat, but I feel the most effective voting is that done with your dollars and this (local humane farming) is what I choose to support.

    January's share:

3 large links of hot italian sausage
    2.8 lbs chicken breast
    1.5 lbs beef short ribs
1 lb pork breakfast sausage patties
1.5 lbs boneless beef chuck steak
    2.3 lbs pork loin chops
    2 lbs chicken leg quarters
    3 lbs ground beef

I didn't think to write down December's share. I remember it included 3 lbs of ground beef, some chicken breasts, a big ham steak, some chicken leg quarters, a couple of nice steaks, and some boneless country ribs.

Some of the cuts are meats I don't normally buy (ribs, ground beef) so I have to learn how to cook them. The "country ribs in the crock pot" were a dismal failure, so I'm hoping to do better with the beef short ribs. I don't normally cook with ground beef at all, so I'm going to have to come up with recipes for it if I'm going to be getting 3lbs every month. There's only so much lasagna and chili we can really eat, and I can't stand meatloaf.

There's not a lot that's sweeter than this...
A short movie (2 minutes) of E and Josh playing among the decorations in Freeport the day after Christmas. Taken with and edited with my iPhone. An experiment. Sound levels are a little louder than I'd like. You've been warned.

A couple different perspectives on 170-35
Here are a couple of coaches from the USA Today article:

Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) was last season's No. 1 in the final Super 25 rankings and is often on the winning ends of routs. Coach Michael Peck said his team plays an up-tempo game similar to Yates, but there are ways to keep routs in check.

"I don't know what he's trying to prove," Peck said. "I look at their roster, and they have a legitimate team. I can't see them losing the rest of their schedule. They play a lot like us with in-your-face defense. They have a senior-laden roster, and they may think this is their year to make a statement. My thing is, act like you've been there before. If we're up by 40 and we have our bench in, every one of those guys better play hard. But we won't trap on ball screens and do things like we normally do in our game plan."

No. 15-ranked Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) defeated Westminster 91-64 on Tuesday. Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight said he didn't play his top six starters against the 4-9 team.

"I had them do cheerleading," McKnight said. "The guys who were my seventh through 17th men all played. It was a fundraiser for their school, and we were doing them a favor. You want to be compassionate, and this was a chance to get my other kids to play."

And here's a columnist from the Houston Press , who even *I* think is way over the top, starting with the first sentence:

It was the biggest rout since Hitler's Panzers took on Poland's cavalry, and showed about as much sportsmanship: The powerful, undefeated Yates High basketball creamed not-so-powerful Lee 170-35, pressing and gunning all the way.

The halftime score was Yates 100-12, so obviously the Lions couldn't take their foot off the gas for fear of a Lee comeback.

Yates coach Greg Wise, who we can only imagine was interviewed in between tripping old ladies with walkers and giggling, told the Houston Chronicle that his mad coaching skillz demanded no less than what happened.

"We practice running, pressing, trapping every day," he said, probably while he idly picked the wings off an insect. "If we get to a game and I tell them not to do what we do in practice, I am not coaching well. I am not leaving my starters in the whole game. We have 15 guys, and all 15 play."

Shades of former UH football coach (and sleazeball) John Jenkins, who used to complain that he got a bad rap for continuing to pass as his team won by scores like 95-21. His offense just wasn't designed not to score (against pathetically overmatched teams), he said.

Lee's coach admitted last night he felt "disrespected." He shouldn't: He's not the one who comes off looking like an a-hole.

News from the high school sports world

The Houston Chronicle brings us the latest lack-of-sportsmanship news:

The Yates High School boys basketball team set a state record and set itself up for controversy Tuesday night at Butler Fieldhouse.

The Lions beat Lee High School 170-35, setting the single-game state scoring record. Hardin-Jefferson had owned the record of 166 points since 1992.

But the Lions' brush with history was marred by a second-half scuffle and questions of sportsmanship.

In the third quarter, a fight erupted after an intentional foul was called on a Lee player. After breaking up the fight, the referees told both coaches they would have to play just five players the remainder of the game. The other players for both teams spent the rest of the second half sitting in the stands.

“I feel very disrespected right now,” Lee coach Jacques Armant said. “I don't understand why Yates just kept scoring and pressing when they were up so much. These are kids. It isn't good to do that to other young men.”

Yates, which led 100-12 at halftime, is 14-0 this season and has won 39 consecutive games. The 100 points in the first half is also a state record and the second-most ever in a boys high school basketball game.

It was the eighth time this season Yates scored more than 100 points and the sixth time the Lions won by more than 60. It was the first time this season Yates' margin of victory topped 100.

“All but the wakeful nightingale; She all night long her amorous descant sung.” - J Milton
E has, lately, taken to falling asleep in the car on the way home from daycare (around 5 - 5:15 pm-ish). Typically we will wake him around 6 to have supper, but that short nap delays his bedtime. Last night I couldn't get him to sleep until ten.

Tonight, he was asleep on the sofa when I got home around 6:30. I didn't have the heart to wake him, although I was sure I'd pay for it later. Its 11:05 pm now, and he hasn't stirred - not even when I carried him upstairs around nine and put him in his own bed. I'm getting ready to tuck myself in .... I suspect that this means he'll be up within the next hour or so, hungry and grouchy and wanting some company. We'll see.

    Dealing with the Droid
Still loving the phone, and loving playing with it.

Most surprising App - I downloaded the DroidLight, that makes the "flash" work as a flashlight. Didn't think I'd use it. Have used it 5 times already.

I realized that I have not yet exported all my old Memos to a new application. Alas - Palm seems to want to export only into useless formats that will require a lot of time to parse out.

I still haven't figured which application to put them in. I'm tempted to put them in EverNote, which I am already using. But perhaps not. Have not yet played with Note Everything ([info]dsrtao's recommendation nor AK Notepad (which was [info]jducoeur's recommendation.

And the lazy weekend award goes to
Us. We didn't get dressed today. I didn't TOUCH the snow. We cooked nothing, really. I even bagged the garbage and dropped it outside the front door.

Last night we threw a small after-dinner cocktail party. Because of weather, it was slightly smaller than it was supposed to be. But it was nice. We spent about two days getting ready and cooking, which was also delightful.

And then we discuss menu )

But what does one do with the leftovers? )

Tomorrow, I think the year will emotionally start again. That will include calling a plumber in the morning, as our water heater is now a water warmer. :-) But that is life in the real world. I'm a bit surprised, because the heater is only a year and a half old, but it is acting like a simple electronics failure in the temperature sensor. The gas unit is sealed, so I can't fiddle with it - it is on. But the outlet pipe is just warm, and I used the drain to empty a quart of water, and it was warm too. So: for now, we only have warm water.

    The interesting question
[info]elizabear linked to a high profile article in the Boston Globe, on polyamory.

[info]osewalrus commented on the article on LJ as a "thoughtful and neutral treatment of the subject", and speculated that how polyamory and societal changes may make "21st Century family law should grow increasingly interesting, especially as hidden prejudices (and no hidden prejudices) play out in the judiciary".

I'm not so sure, for several reasons. The obvious one is that America is having too much trouble extending binary relationship recognition, and has no real structure for the management of a more complex model. In historic times, it has even gone as far as the equivalent of war against polygamous groups. US law is also an extension of religious marital practices - those (with very rare exceptions) do not

But what first perplexes me is this: do polyamorous folks actually desire the ability to convert their relationships to polygamous ones? That is to say, what portions of the dynamicism of polyamorous relationships do the practitioners THEMSELVES desire to have state registration (and interference) over, and what sorts of state marital benefits should extend to "my husbands occasional boy-lover and his-in-turn mistress, who I like".

As I explore the intellectual extensions of the question, I come to some startling conclusions. But, like [info]osewalrus, my relationship practice is quaint to the point where I may not be qualified to be a member of Congress - I'm monogamous, monosexual, ordinary, and do not cheat. :-)

Back to my main question - to what extent do polyamorous people WANT polygamy, and what portions of their relationships do they wish to see under state registration and perhaps control in return for the legal benefits of monogamous marriage?

A couple of really interesting pieces from the NY Times
    1. There's more to publishing than meets the screen," an op-ed piece by Jonathan Galassi.

Fascinating articles that asks the question, "Is a published work, which has been edited and promoted by a publishing company, really the property of the author's estate and can it be sold -- whole -- an to a company to make it an e-book?"

The only thing that botherd me was the failure of the paper to identify Galassi as the president of a publishing company.

    2. "Dennis Brutus Dies at 85; Fought Apartheid With Sports"

It's strange when a hero dies and that's the first you heard about him.

Brutus, who for a time was in a cell next to Nelson Mandela at the Robben Island penal colony, pushed for -- and got -- bans on South African teams in various international competition because Blacks were passed over in favor of less-talented Whites and because of apartheid itself.

    Cookies and cool hand-made items

OK, as many of you have already figured out, part of today's to-do list was to send out reminders about two Travel Fund fund-raisers going on this month.

If you have seen this before, I apologize.

You may feel free to forward these judiciously, knowing that anyone on EK List, Concordia, Glenn Linn or the SCA LJ has seen it already. It's going to Royal Household lists, too.

    1. There will be a second edition of the Princess’ Cookie Caper at 12th Night, Saturday, Jan. 16, in Barre, Vt.

We need people to bake cookies and people to buy cookies.

The cookies will be $10 a pound and all proceeds will go to the  Royal Travel Fund.

This sale is being coordinated by me and Lady Frigga from Glenn Linn. We could certainly use a couple of people to take shifts at the table.

The sale is planned to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Please send me a note privately if you would like to help or if you are going to make cookies.

All donations should include recipe cards.Your cookie choice is limited only by your imagination.

     2. The  “By Our Own Hands” exhibition and silent auction, which will be held at the Marketplace at Birka, Jan. 30, in Manchester, NH.

All residents of the kingdom are invited to use their arts & sciences skills to create something to be raffled off to benefit the Royal Travel Fund. These can be items you have already made, something you might make between now and then or promissory notes for items such as scrolls or clothing you will make at a future date. (If you are offering a promissory, it would be great if you could include a picture or examples of something similar you have done. Bards are welcome to donate promissories for songs, poems or similar pieces.

In all cases, we would like the item to have an information sheet, with some documentation about it and its creator.

I think we can really have some fun with this.

Please contact me privately if you would like to donate, and let me know the logistics as well.

Thank you, dershmied (and Vairavi, for suggesting it!)
Your Indian pudding recipe was absolutely perfect! The recipe was easy to follow. The consistency was light and fluffy. And the spices were perfect. A friend and I had some while it was warm (she'd never had it before, really liked it with vanilla ice cream--mine was perfect plain). I sent some leftovers home with her and saved a little bit to enjoy cold.

    1. Can we have a hearty Liamverse welcome for [info]karstyl  ? She's No. 1.

    2. Dear Grocery Store;

    Valentine's Day candy?

    No love,

    Liam

    3. Some day we won't notice this, but I thought it was wicked cool that a woman, Pam Ward, was doing the play-by-play on the UConn-South Carolina fotoball game.

    4. Dear Albany Times-Union;

The full-page crossword puzzle is waaaaaaaay wicked cool.

Next time tell us where we can find the bloody answers.

    Yours in a four-letter answer,

    Liam

    5. I love the New York Post!

    Today's front-page headline: "Hoops Stupes".

    6. Oh, the guy who scored the Flyers' only goal in the 2-1 Fenway Park loss to the Bruins yesterday?

Danny Syvret. I interviewed him last month when he scored the winning goal with 0.8 left for the Adirondack Phantoms here in Glens Falls.

Saturday afternoon: First post of the New Year . . .

    1. LJ Details: If you are not on my friends' list, you still have the chance to be No. 1 of 2010.

I have blown my chance to post every day in 2010.

    That's "Twenty-ten," by the way.

    2. Weather: Snow last night, more snow coming. But at least it's 28 degrees.

    3. Movies: As I may have mentioned, we were gifted with a 32-inch, flat-screen TV by [info]alethea_eastrid's parents. It has a DVD player in it, so suddenly, I am the library's best DVD customer. I have watched  Dirty Harry," "Under Seige," and the first eight episodes of "NCIS." I have "Taking Chance," which I have really been looking forward to, the updated "Red Dawn" DVD with new features, and the good "Highlander" movie up next.

    4. Books: I read 2.5 books at [info]alethea_eastrid's parents -- Stuart Woods' "Chiefs," John Grisham's "Playing For Pizza," and half of "Here if You Need Me."

I have had great luck at the library, finding unexpected new books by P.T. Deutermann and WEB Griffin and stumbling onto "Boneshaker," which I really want to read.

    5. New Year's Eve: Low key and enjoyable at [info]knoggleknot's with [info]alethea_eastrid , [info]jenphalian, [info]zarhooe , [info]slipjig , and [info]rafaela .

    6. Cooking: Made the Guinness Beef Stew for New Year's and also made the bacalhau. Both were great. Cooked breakfast for four yesterday, including cheesy eggs, home fries and pumpkin pamcakes (from a mix).

    7. Photo: This is just amazing!

My Wish for the new year...
I was trying to find a way to express what I want/feel for the new year. It's already been explained in this poem, Desiderata. More specific thoughts will follow in a later post...

    Happy New Year to all those I love. If you're reading this- that's you. {{hugs}}

    The Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,

even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble,

it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

    Be yourself.

    Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,

it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

    You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life,

    keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

    Current Mood: calm
    Current Music: beautiful silence
